Shawangunk Mountains Scenic Byway
This scenic roadway is an 88-mile byway that encompasses the northern Shawangunk Mountains and travels through the Rondout and Wallkill valleys, linking communities that have a common relationship to the northern Shawangunks and forming a distinct region of the state with its own special character.
When we first began working on this project, sixteen years ago, New York State awarded the designation based on the significance of the scenic, natural, historic, and recreational resources in the region. Focusing on the strengths that form the foundation we have marketed the Byway to advance tourism and economic development for the 11 municipalities included in the region. An intermunicipal partnership to implement the corridor management plan, help improve transportation systems, and to advance the mutual goal of gaining economic growth through tourism while helping to preserve the important resources of our region, was formed. The board consists of the supervisors and mayors of each town and village and county officials, working together for the future of the region.
Ad Essentials is responsible for all marketing and has worked together with the Project Manager to develop the Corridor Management Plan, helped to facilitate an Open Space Plan, and presented to town boards and the community. Direction and work with a cartographer produced a topographical map to highlight the features of the region. Our photography of the byway area has further added to the focus on the natural beauty and recreation to attract visitors. Our photos are featured on the website, through social media, in area magazines, in slide show presentations, and in state highway overlooks.
Our efforts have brought awareness to the area and have helped to increase tourism in this Hudson Valley region significantly.
